The Meat People Islington, London

Meat seems to be a trending name in London with Meat Liquor and Meat Easy having already grabbed a good steak, and then along came The Meat People in Islington, a small and retro outfitted restaurant, that mostly prides itself on being a steakhouse, and I was probably the only person who decided to go in for a fish dinner! In that, was my mistake and downfall! Who goes to somewhere called Meat People and orders fish? A hungry and not very alert chef, apparently. Then again, even my negroni was too sweet! I mean, it’s a negroni, the simplest of all cocktails! Anyway….

First up was grilled mackerel, cherry tomatoes, caperberries : the mackerel being a gloriously cooked to perfection – crispy skin, translucent throughout, yet there seemed to be a soup’s portion of cherry tomatoes on the plate (overkill).

Sea bream, beetroot, broadbeans, huacaina was sadly quite a downer with boringly cold beetroot (unseasoned, un-done-anything-to and not in a lovely au naturel way), cold broad beans and a cold and insipid sauce (white cheese, yellow chilli) .

Dessert brought upon Malbec poached pear, cinnamon, star anise, mascarpone ice cream. An overcooked pear, beyond rescuing by lime zest and cloyingly, annoyingly too sweet. The ice cream was a lucky addition and a better morsel. What made matters worse was that when I informed the waitress at the end that I thought the pear was too sweet, her reply was “But it’s poached in Malbec. It can’t be too sweet. You don’t know what you’re talking about”.
