Eating in Khao Lak, Thailand

Surely one would think that on a beach in Thailand, eateries would be abundant in their offerings and food would be fresher than dew drops at dawn, and while this theory holds water for the most part, it’s only when one gets a dose of ‘tourist’ food that the grumbling starts. Khao Lak, an hour out of Phuket, does have many a beautiful beach to wander dreamily along and saunter into one of the many beach shacks for a lazy day on the beach. Well, these little eateries are definitely worth a trip…..

Green Pepper: Near Khuk khak beach is this beautiful bar and restaurant, with a menu that only spans 1 page (which automatically means that there’s a no-nonsense attitude about the place). Every dish we tried on 3 consecutive occasions was great, from fish & chips, to Thai green curry, massaman curry. All very fresh, all with healthy heaps of vegetables and when sipping some great cocktails and gazing out at the sea, this is one place that one doesn’t want to get up from.

.

Joe’s Steakhouse: When one misses a good bit of grilled beef, or any other meat for that matter, head over to Joe’s, which is quite near Green Pepper. The meat is Australian, and a good healthy portion too, cooked perfectly with a heap of salad, chips and the sauce of your choice to go with. Tip top!

.

Stemper Cafe: Ideal for the afternoon session when needing to catch up on Facebook and emails. They’ve got free wi-fi and there’s no better way to spend the afternoon than sipping on their sumptuous mocha shake and nibbling on one of the many many cakes they’ve got displayed.

.

Phu Khao Lak: Also a sprawling hotel, the restaurant is on the high street with a fairly large menu, but cooked with love and served with love. A choice of fresh fish caught on the day sits on ice so that one can choose which one they’d like cooked. The meats too are fantastic.

.

Happy Snapper: Cocktails, cocktails and more cocktails. Page after page after page. They also have a live band most nights belting out cover versions in their own unique way. All the cocktails are made with a healthy dose of alcohol too!
