Afternoon tea at the Ritz

It’s one of those things that you just have to tick off on foodie exploits. It simply has to be done! Got to get your gladrags on, book several weeks, or even months in advance, make sure everyone knows about it and walk through the gilded doors of London’s most exclusive hotel, the Ritz. From there, it’s a journey back in time to days of fancy and formality, with waiters in tail coats smiling and gliding about, someone in a white suit playing the piano in the background and the only choice you need to make is what tea you want. For us, it was lapsang souchong.

Silver, silver everywhere and a tower full of treats. For we nibbled on sandwiches a’plenty, of Ham, Cucumber, Chicken, Smoked Salmon, Cheese & Pickle, Egg & Mayo, followed by Chocolate opera, Rose macaroon, Lemon meringue, Vanilla mille feuille and the softest, warm Scones!

Not just that, but the refills of sandwiches are endless. Gluten attack!

And just so you don’t wonder if this is all that there is to the fabled afternoon tea,

Vanilla and pear Cambridge burnt cream and the trolley of Lemon drizzle cake and Bakewell tart. All served with a flourish!

Delirious on a starch and sugar consumption for a whole month, we sat there with our brew and gazed upon the rest of the dining room that was all full of smiles and the look of those approaching the food coma barrier. If there’s an traditional, old fashioned tea experience worth having, it’s the Ritz where it should be had.
